Absratct

A workshop on pathology was held in Lisboa on November 23–25, 1992.

As a result of the recent growth of intensive and semi-intensive aquaculture in the world, problems of fish diseases have occured and become among countries.

As fish diseases and technic of fish health management differs among countries of the region, the workshop is aimed at reviewing of the principal diseases relevant to the mediterranean with special emphases on the present status of fish diseases and their control; the shortcomings in the region, and the existing cooperation programmes/networks to be used as a model.

During the workshop, the main problematic areas experienced by most of member countries were indentified as follows:

  1. the lack of incentive to invest in back-up pathology R & D work at national level; the lack of available information on the status of finfish species and the necessity to exchange the knowledge through networking,

  2. unadequate human resources at all levels;

  3. the lack of data collection/documentation and dissemination facilities.

After presentation of the various experts' communication, it was mainly recommended the following:

  1. Promotion and coordination of R & D work on fish pathology to adapt the existing technologies to the Mediterranean species;

  2. Coordination of activities, specifically the organisation of training programmes and conduction of feasibility studies, to ensure standardisation and uniformity in methodologies of pathological analysis as well as all aspect of disease prevention and control.

  3. Involvement of private producers to the extent of forming an association on a regional basis: and the establishment of a regional reference collection.

It was therefore concluded that a network on Mediterranean fish pathology with a lead centre to coordinate its activities be urgently established.

The Editor would also like to thank UNDP and FAO representatives for their assistance and participation to better difine the Project's structure, procedure and rules.

Thanks are also addressed to all the National and Sub-Regional Coordinators for their active participation and contribution.

Note from the reviser

The revision and publication of this document could only be done a long time after the closure of the project. This has led to some difficulties in finalising the documents and implementing corrections, because authors and contributors as well as some of the original material or files were no longer available.

Therefore contributions from participants and session papers annexed to most of the documents were left in their original form. No language corrections were introduced, the content was not modified and left under their respective authors' responsibility.

Considering the above, we hope that the reader will understand that a standard of publication could not be maintained on a level as high as we would have liked it to be.
